Bridging the Ohio River

2/27/2006

To meet the growing transportation needs across the Ohio River, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KTC) are building two new bridges and rebuilding a bridge interchange. The $2.46 billion project, a joint effort of the two agencies, is scheduled for completion in 2020.

TBE was on the design team that was awarded the contract. TBE’s services will focus on identifying utilities along the bridge interchange and approach on the Indiana side of the river. TBE will also identify utilities in the Old Jeffersonville area of town where streetscaping will be performed. Once possible utility conflicts have been identified, TBE will provide locating services (test holes). In addition, TBE will work with the utilities on any necessary relocation efforts.

Just Where Are Those Utilities, Anyway?

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to allocate approximately $80 million on a 1.2-mile section of Route US131 in downtown Grand Rapids, according to MDOT Region Engineer Steve Earl. Discovery of some structural settlement and the need to fix it presented an opportunity to also straighten and widen the roadways, from three to four lanes in places - much needed renovations for a section that carries 100,000 vehicles per day.
