Another Big Design-Build Win

03/07/2005

TBE has won another big design-build project. TBE will be providing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and utility coordination services to Dulles Transit Partners (DTP), as DTP performs preliminary engineering on the first phase of its design for the 23-mile extension of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s (DRPT’s) Metrorail to Dulles International Airport and beyond. DTP is a partnership of the Washington Group and Bechtel.

The proposed rail extension is planned to run underground, at ground and above ground at various segments as it makes its way from the Metrorail’s existing Orange Line to Dulles. Because the area is highly urbanized, the project presents significant utility challenges and complex right-of-way takes.

TBE’s first design-build mega project, SH 130, is continuing in Austin, Texas, and TBE plans to pursue future design-build projects of this magnitude.

Just Where Are Those Utilities, Anyway?

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to allocate approximately $80 million on a 1.2-mile section of Route US131 in downtown Grand Rapids, according to MDOT Region Engineer Steve Earl. The section, called the 'S-Curve,' is a winding series of surface and elevated highway and six bridges.

Discovery of some structural settlement and the need to fix it presented an opportunity to also straighten and widen the roadways, from three to four lanes in places - much needed renovations for a section that carries 100,000 vehicles per day.
