Keeping Tahoe Blue

12/03/2005

The perimeter of Lake Tahoe, which sits on the border between California and Nevada, is approximately 72 miles. The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) owns and maintains approximately 39 miles of roadway within the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Since 1996, NDOT has operated under its Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Master Plan, which includes erosion control on its roadways to help protect the lake’s environment and “keep Tahoe blue.”

NDOT’s current erosion control efforts include building retaining walls along portions of the roadways, along with the installation of drainage systems with filtration catch basins to keep sediment out of the lake. TBE has been hired by engineering consultant Wood Rodgers to perform Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) services along four roadway segments.

The first two segments must be completed by November 1 . . . or before it snows:

• State Road (SR) 207, from US 50 to Daggett Pass, a distance of 3.13 miles
• SR 28, from SR 431 to the California/Nevada border, a distance of 2.86 miles

TBE will provide services on the other two segments in the spring:

• SR 431, from SR 28 north for 6.6 miles
• US 50, three locations for a total of 2.93 miles

Subsurface Underground Engineering: 'The next best thing to X-ray vision'

Notre Dame de Grace, Quebec: Some 300 people, including 60 children from a daycare centre, were forced to flee after a backhoe struck a gas main. The leak was under control in about an hour. To help avoid the possibility of ignition, power was shut off to some 3,200 homes and businesses. A Fire Department Spokesman said that the excavator had requested a locate and the line had been marked. 'They should have been using hand shovels, not a backhoe,' the spokesman said.
