Designing Underground Electrical in Orlando
03/07/2005
The I-4/State Road (SR) 408 interchange in downtown Orlando, Florida, is being redesigned, with the construction contract scheduled to be put out for bid in July. The redevelopment requires the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to design a new underground electrical distribution system (manholes and ducts).
The design work is extremely complex. First, underground utility congestion already exists in the area. Second, because of the new highway interchange, the eventual configuration of underground utilities will change, so the new underground electrical system design must take into consideration existing and planned utility lines.
With such a complex design and aggressive schedule, the OUC awarded the design contract to TBE. Because of the underground congestion, the job also required Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) to map all of the utilities to determine how and where to place the new system. TBE is a national leader in providing SUE services on construction projects.
The OUC, realizing the value of TBE’s services and capabilities, decided to make the contract a three-year master contract with a two-year extension option.
